Spotlight On Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. We have been the leader in one-to-one youth service for more than a century, developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact to the lives of young people. Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors children, ages 6 through 18 in communities across the country – including Delaware. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware has been providing mentors for Delaware youth since 1964.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth. National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their Big Brother and Big Sister mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives. By participating in our youth mentoring programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:

Connections
  • more confident in their schoolwork performance
  • able to get along better with their families
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware has a variety of volunteer opportunities available. Mentors and children come together through our two essential programs:

Community-based Mentoring: You and your Little Brother or Sister get together two to four times a month after school or on the weekends to share the kinds of activities you already like to do, such as: shooting hoops, baking cookies, walking your dog or just hanging out at the park or library.

School-based Mentoring: This mentoring takes place at school. Spend 45 minutes to an hour each week with a child who needs extra support and academic assistance. It's not about being a tutor…it's about being a friend.

How to Become a Big Brother or Big Sister

A lot of things have to happen before we make a match. After you express an interest in our volunteer opportunities, all our Bigs go through a thorough background check and careful interview process. Then we match Bigs and Littles based on location, personalities and preferences. We provide full support for our volunteer programs along the way…so that matches can grow into lasting friendships.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware needs your help. We currently have a waiting list of 70 boys, in New Castle County, between the ages of 6-17 who need a Big Brother. Your time and attention is worth more to a child than you realize. Check us out on the web at www.bbbsde.org or call us at (302) 998-3577. Give a "Little" time…Create a "Big" opportunity.
